A Message from the Board of Directors

Dear UCP Community,

You may seen news of Vincent Ray Williams III announcing legal action against Urban Compassion Project. We want to respond directly and honestly.

Out of respect for Vincent, the community we serve, and a desire for diligence and due process, the Board made every effort to handle these matters internally. That is no longer possible.

Earlier this year, the Board discovered financial irregularities in UCP’s accounts. Money was identified as not consistently reaching intended recipients, and certain transactions raised concerns about the use of organizational funds for personal expenses. Vincent was placed on paid administrative leave pending completion of a full internal investigation. He resigned from his role as Executive Director shortly afterward, before the investigation was completed. Vincent has since acknowledged in writing to misusing UCP funds for his personal benefit.

We could not be more surprised, saddened, and deeply disappointed by this situation. Like many of you, we were inspired by Vincent’s story and the work he did.  But let us be clear: We took action because we have a fiduciary responsibility to uphold this organization’s mission, protect the vital resources donors entrust us with, and respect the time and effort of  volunteers. We take that responsibility seriously.

The claims made against UCP are without merit and will be addressed through the appropriate legal channels. Legal proceedings are now underway on both sides and we respectfully decline to comment further at this time; but we are not standing still:

UCP is fully operational. Our programs continue, and our commitment to this community is unwavering.

We remain fully dedicated to uplifting our community and building a better Oakland and Bay Area for everyone.

Thank you for your continued trust in this work.

UCP Board of Directors
